Microservices are an architectural and organizational approach to software development where each application is composed of small, independent services that communicate with one another over a well-defined API. These services are owned by small, self-contained teams. Microservices architectures make applications easier to scale, faster to develop, faster to deploy, and thereby enable innovation and accelerate time to market for new features.

Netflix

Netflix, one of the first companies to employ a microservice architecture, used Amazon Web Services' cloud computing infrastructure to deploy its new network of independent services. Netflix initially moved noncustomer-facing applications and processes into AWS before detaching customer-facing features such as account registration and movie selection from its monolithic system. The company took approximately two years to complete the migration and release of its new design in 2011.

eBay

In an effort to remain competitive, eBay needed to improve the speed at which it released features and improvements. In order to do this, eBay divided its codebase into smaller units called microservices and implemented a microservice architecture. This made it possible for eBay to respond quickly to the issues that arose as a result of the codebase’s increasing complexity and enhanced developer productivity. Similar to other early adopters of microservice architecture, eBay published its own solutions for other developers while fixing its own issues.

Spotify

Spotify built a system that could handle millions of users on numerous platforms and also incorporated business regulations. By being flexible, the company was able to react quickly to the fast-paced market. Their technology teams met these needs by creating autonomous microservices that were managed by more than 90 full-stack teams grouped into tribes.
